Does Talent Run in The Dhami Family? Presenting: Rana Sahota

The Bhangra Community has a new face to welcome into the crowd! Newcomer, Rana Sahota, from Leicester, will be releasing his debut album, "Khadke Glassy," on July 3rd.
The soon-to-be hit artist was practically born into the Music Industry. The 22-year old Bhangra singer is the nephew of Heera Group lead singer, Palvinder Dhami and therefore, cousin of Rishi Rich protégé, H-Dhami.
Does musical talent run in the family? We'll let you be the judge.
"Khadke Glassy" was produced by the internationally renowned musical genius, Aman Hayer. Sahota's album is a departure from the fusion sound that we typically hear from him in that; "Khadke Glassy" does not have much of a HipHop vibe to it. His songs have a classic Bhangra feel to them with the standard dhol and tumbi along with the singer's charming voice.
The album definitely takes the listener back to the sound of Heera and an influence from his uncle is apparent. Rana Sahota's album also features notable lyricists: Amarjit Musapuria, Satti Khokhewalia, Amrit Saab, Gurmit Billichao, Jassi Nauli Wala.
Sahota has been hard at work for 3 years to bring you an album filled with dance floor smash hits. So will Palvinder Dhami be proud to say that Rana Sahota is his nephew or will he be named the black sheep? Take a listen and look at his video for his title track, "Khadke Glassy" and let us know what you think. Are you going to purchase his album when it releases?

New York Marks First Mega Hit of 2009

The chain of bad luck is finally over, well at least for now it is. Yash Raj Film’s ‘New York’ is a major success! After a long, unanticipated dry spell, ‘New York ‘is the first super hit of 2009 as hoards of crowds filled the multiplexes. It is reported that there was 70 percent occupancy in the early shows, which grew to 90-100 percent as the evening proceeded.
This is a major turning point in the Bollywood film industry as it seemed to have come to a screeching halt over the past few months. We all thought that it would be a booming success again after the strike, however there was no such luck. It looked like the plague would never end with each mediocre release doing poorly at the box office.
This weekend the industry finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel with the release of ‘New York.’ The weekend crowds brought in revenue of Rs 18-19 crore. Not only were the multiplexes jam packed with viewers, but the small town theaters as well. It is reported that this film will make Rs 50 crore net business at the end of its run; which we cannot expect anytime soon.
Sources from a big cinema official reported, “It was a dream weekend for us. The best ever we saw in 2009. ‘New York’ had a great crowd, but also there was a huge turnout for ‘Terminator Salvation’ and ‘The Hangover.’ ‘Bolt’ too had its share of audience.”
For those of you that already saw it, let us know what you think, did this film live up to your expectations? And for those of you yet to see it…GO SEE IT.

Kanti Shah Reveals Info about His Shiney Ahuja Movie

Kanti Shah isn’t known for making sappy Bollywood movies. So it’s no surprise that a topic most people would be a little unwilling to take on; such as the subject of rape, has interested Shah.If you happen to be a fan of him, then you’ll be happy to know that he’s making a film that’s named ‘Rape’. Yes, there’s no hidden meaning or double entendre here. And guess who the movie is based on? The controversial Shiney Ahuja rape case of course!Kanti Shah opened up to Bollywood Hungama and said "Yes, my latest film ‘Rape’ has been heavily inspired by the Shiney Ahuja case. While the hero's name is Imran, the heroine is Sapna and both are newcomers. Mark my words; they are definitely the faces to watch out for! My film has got 5 songs in all with its lilting music composed by the very talented Sameer Sen (of Dilip Sen - Sameer Sen). Of these 5 songs, two are super duper item numbers!" He also added, "All that I can tell you is that since the film is called ‘Rape’, it will obviously deal with the sensitive subject of rape. And it has the hero raping the heroine. That's all. I think I have told you enough. Beyond this, I cannot tell even a word more. But, do watch out for this film soon! It's bound to rock the nation." We want to know what you think about this movie idea from Kanti Shah? Do you think that he’ll do a good job with it or do you think that it’s going to be B grade stuff? Let us know your thoughts in the form of a comment

Shanghai Toasts Priyanka Chopra with its Golden Goblet!

My amblings are amiable this week. Mourning Michael's memory not only mellows my mood, but my musings, too. This week Bollywood's mentionables will not be massacred, er, messed with. And we return this week to Priyanka Chopra...
That said, Jin Jue! Or may the Best in Film walk away with the Shanghai International Film Festivals' Golden Goblet award.
And Priyanka Chopra did...
Her hard work has paid off, and this week she drank from, I mean walked away with, the Golden Goblet in hand. The Jin Jue or Golden Goblet/Cup award is reputedly the top award of the Shanghai Festival.
This is a coup for Ms. Chopra in light of last week's insult: Director Ashutosh Gowariker charged that perhaps Priyanka Chopra was not the most "natural" winner of the Best Actress Award at the Indian Film Academy Awards, but only a candidate due to her "hard work." Let us recall Gowariker's unfortunate public reflection on Priyanka's win, and Aishwarya Rai's loss: "Maybe it is because you are very hard-working and she is a natural..."
It appears that loads of others disagree: Priyanka Chopra has won ten awards in the past six months alone. The Shanghai International Film Festival is known as one of the largest film festivals in Asia, making it clear that her talent is recognized far and wide. Even Danny Boyle, astonishingly astute director of Slumdog Millionaire and 2009's president of the Shanghai jury competition, believed in Priyanka's natural and hardworking abilities.
I only hope that all of this attention doesn't lead to jealousies among her peers - those possessing natural talents as well as the simply hardworking. After all Priyanka herself passed on the opportunity to pop a revenge jab at Gowariker in her acceptance speech. This is the knowing nuance that distinguishes the desiring from the deserving, in my opinion.
Ms. Chopra not only deserved, and won, the most desired award of the evening, but also became the first Indian to do so. Kudos!

Denise Richards on Kissing Akshay Kumar

By now you've probably heard Hollywood star Denise Richards has a guest appearance in Akshay Kumar's latest film, 'Kambakkht Ishq,' but now we hear she's raving about his kissing skills! Wooo!!! Now here's a sexy story for you! It seems our Akshay impressed Denise while shooting Sajid Nadiawala's film in Los Angeles.
Denise is quoted as saying, "Akshay was so down to earth and very genuine. He made me feel very comfortable, plus he's a good kisser! I can see why he's India's sexiest actor." Hmm... genuine - yes, down to earth - yes, good kisser - sure, but India's sexiest actor - we're sure there are a few fans of some other sexy actors in Bollywood that disagree!
Denise makes a cameo appearance in a wedding sequence in which she's dressed in a bridal gown on the beach. Plus a few other scenes, including the kissing scene! All that seems to have left a lasting impression on Denise because she says that she'd love to do another Bollywood movie and that she had a great experience with this one. Hmm... maybe her experience was documented for her reality show on US television, 'Denise Richards: It's Complicated'! Now wouldn't that be great to watch?!
"I couldn't believe how kind everyone was and they were so passionate about the film. All the actors were very sweet and gorgeous! They helped translate when I needed to understand something. I had a great experience and hope to do another Bollywood movie," said Denise.
So want to see the kiss in question? Well, 'Kambakkht Ishq' releases on July 3rd and co - stars, Kareena Kapoor, and Amrita Arora with cameos by Sylvester Stallone and Brandon Routh. So what do you guys think about Denise's candid confession? Are you excited about seeing the film? Will you watch it in theatres? Drop us a comment with your thoughts!

Music Review: Love Aaj Kal

After the hit score of "Jab We Met", director Imtiaz Ali teams up with Pritam once again for the music of Saif Ali Khan's debut production "Love Aaj Kal". Pritam has left no stone unturned in creating soulful melodies. The film that stars Saif and Deepika Padukone has seven original songs and three remixes in the soundtrack.
The first track 'Aahun Aahun', which has an electrifying start with the strumming of the guitar, is a mixture of the familiar tunes of Jazzy B and Pritam's composition. Sung by Neeraj Shridhar, Saleem, and Suzanne, the song keeps on going between the two genres and is very entertaining. It sets the mood by mixing both Indian and western influences. 'Aahun Aahun' will surely be a hit. The number also has a remixed version, which will become a favorite on the dance floor.
Up next is a beautiful performance of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's voice. 'Aaj Din Chadeyya' starts with a small alaap. A romantic song that is extremely soothing to the ears, this track strikes a chord with the listeners. The song has a feel-good factor.
With brilliant vocals by Sunidhi Chauhan and Neeraj Sridhar, the next song 'Chor Bazari' starts with foot-tapping, peppy music. The lyrics are not the highlight of the song, but the number has the potential to impress music lovers. This also has a remixed version, which is moderately average.
The man of all seasons, K.K. makes his presence felt with the fast-paced song 'Main Kya Hoon', which is enhanced by electronic and psychedelic beats. It's return to modern times with this solo track that has a happy feel to it with a definite Pritam touch.
With the next song 'Thoda Thoda Pyar', the Punjabi flavor takes superiority. Sung by Sunidhi Chauhan, it has a folk touch to it in places. But it might not go on to become a chartbuster.
Neeraj Sridhar returns with 'Twist', which is a dance number that is high on beats. The remixed version, however, is better than the original.
Finally we have Mohit Chauhan chanting the song 'Ye Dooriyan'. Mohit's vocals are the highlight in this melodious romantic number that has as much chances of being popular as his past hit numbers. A song that has a small hint of sadness to it, the number is a must for the two hearts that could perhaps be on the verge of separation but may well be coming together again.
On the whole, Pritam has done a good job with the soundtrack and created songs that are sure to become hits. It is not every day that each and every song turns out to be extremely good in an album but that's indeed the case with "Love Aaj Kal". This one is going to be unstoppable once it hits stores!

Priyanka Chopra Wins Top Award at the Shanghai International Film Festival

Bollywood starlet Priyanka Chopra might need to purchase a bigger mantel to display her awards on. The actress has had a busy year so far, bringing in 10 awards in the past six months. Just this past weekend (June 21, 2009) she was presented her 10th from the Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF).
The award is called the 'Jin Jue' Award and is the most coveted of the entire ceremony, well aren't you lucky Ms. Chopra. Priyanka Chopra is the first Indian actor to be given this award in recognition of her contribution to film.
Priyanka Chopra was happy to say that "I feel very privileged to receive this honor from the Shanghai International Film Festival. As an actor, it is very encouraging to be recognized for your work. For me, an award such as this on such a big international platform gives me an opportunity to present India and our cinema to the world."
Let us know what you think about Priyanka bringing in all this award winning bling. Think she deserves it or would you rather see another Bollywood staple getting some affection.

Does Ness Wadia Have a New Girlfriend

After a four year long relationship, it seems like Ness Wadia got over it pretty quickly. While he and Preity Zinta haven't been in the public eye as much since the split, all of that has changed as Ness Wadia was seen on the arm of a new woman.
Preity Zinta told DNA that she's "getting away from it all," by going to the U.S. for about a month. Well this seems like the perfect time for Ness Wadia's big reveal. And we're not talking about a new color in textiles.
On Wednesday night, Ness Wadia made a very public appearance at a men's magazine party with Delhi-based heiress and model Ayesha Thapar. A source said, "They were clearly very comfortable in each other's company. Ness came in only for a brief while and he didn't socialize much. But yes, he and Ayesha seemed to be enjoying each other's company when he was at the party."
Is a rebound Ness Wadia's way of mending a broken heart? That we're not sure of, but it's clear that Preity Zinta is going to be faced with some very real issues when she gets back. What do our readers think about all of this? Make sure to leave us your comments.

'New York' revolves around three friends whose lives are deeply impacted by the fallout of 9/11. Samir aka Sam (John Abraham), Omar (Neil Nitin Mukesh) and Maya (Katrina Kaif), all students at New York State University, fully enjoy campus life. Omar, a first-time foreign student, fast befriends Sam and Maya to eventually develop a love for America, and adapt to the American lifestyle. The film opens nearly 7 years after the tragic events of 9/11 with Omar being detained and interrogated by FBI agent Roshan (Irrfan Khan), who forcefully hires Omar as an undercover agent ordering him to infiltrate the life of his college friend Sam; who the FBI suspects to be a terrorist. Omar complies with Roshan’s orders under the condition that the FBI won’t kill Sam if he surrenders. When the friends reunite, Omar learns that Sam and Maya are happily married with a daughter. Once Omar enters Sam’s home, he has many failed attempts at unveiling his activist identity. Sam in turn narrates his dreadful past to Omar of how he was illegally held captive, tortured by the FBI for 9 months and brutally victimized for being a Muslim suspect of terrorism after 9/11. Bollywood Movie Review: Hum Phirr Mileinge

There are times when you genuinely feel that there's bankruptcy of ideas in Bollywood. And you feel strongly this when you watch a film like HUM PHIRR MILEINGE.
The recipe is simple. Add DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE, QAYAMAT SE QAYAMAT TAK, HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM and KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM, shake it rigorously and presto, HUM PHIRR MILEINGE is ready to be served.
To put it bluntly, HUM PHIRR MILEINGE is archaic and outdated. You actually pinch yourself while watching this one. Is this real? Perhaps, director Manish Goel is completely clueless about the kind of cinema being made these days. The direction is unbelievably weak and so is the writing.
Frankly, nothing works in this film, except for a couple of tuneful songs [Sandesh Shandilya], which, sadly, show up even if there's no situation.
Given its poor script, the actors go through their parts mechanically. It's sad to see a talent like Sarwar Ahuja being reduced to such roles. Newcomer Kkhushi [veteran Tabassum's grand-daughter] gets no scope. Also, she could've done without those layers of makeup.
Vikram Gokhale and Smita Jaykar [Kkhushi's parents] and Kiran Kumar and Rati Agnihotri [Sarwar's parents] are stereotypical. The actress playing Kkhushi's aunt is loud.
On the whole, HUM PHIRR MILEINGE is boring stuff.

Kailash Kher goes global with "Kailasa Chaandan Mein"

New Delhi, May 29 (IANS) He came from a humble background and burst on the Bollywood music scene with the song "Allah ke bande". Now Singer Kailash Kher is all set to go global with his third album "Kailasa Chaandan Mein" and says international recognition is "encouraging".
"Getting international recognition is always good and welcomed. It is not easy to get international recognition or bag an international project. One has to create a niche for oneself where there is already so much competition and talent," Kailash told IANS over phone from Mumbai.
"It is always nice and encouraging when you get recognition at home. But if you make a mark in other countries, it's a great thing. It makes one proud and you feel honoured that your talent in not only limited to just one country," added the singer who is synonymous with a raw and earthy voice.
"Kailasa Chaandan Mein" will be released internationally by New York based World Music Label, Cumbancha Records. Sony Music will release it in India.
"My third album after 'Kailasa' and 'Kailasa Jhommo Re' will be released internationally under the label Cumbancha records of New York which is a sister concern of Putumayo. Putumayo specialises in Latin, Afro-Cuban music and other genres of world music," said Kailash, who has moved base from Delhi to Mumbai.
"This one will be more mature, bolder and lyrically deeper. Like our other albums, in this album too you will find Sufi elements," he added.
The album will also feature Kailash's bandmates Paresh and Naresh. It has eight tracks. "Kailasa Chaandan Mein" is set to release next month.
Kailash, who sang hits like "O Sikandar", "Ya Rabba", "Teri deewani", will also perform at foreign music festivals this year.
"Me and my band Kailasa will be performing in various international music festivals from June onwards. Our first performance will be at the 72nd season of the Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco and later at the Hollywood Ball in Los Angeles," said the singer who is also associated with BIG 92.7 FM's Dhun Daar T20 World Cup Campaign.
The singer had his share of struggle before he struck the chord with 2002 hit song "Allah ke bande" from the film "Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II". But he has no regrets.
"Initially when I came to Mumbai, I faced lots of difficulties. But I have no regrets. I feel that hardships make a person strong to face anything in the world," said Kailash, who married Sheetal Bhan recently.
As far as films are concerned, Kailash has various projects in his kitty, including a song in a Hollywood project for which A.R. Rahman is composing music and Karan Johar's film starring Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor.

UTV and Ken agree on pushing Kaminey ahead of Shahid-Genelia starrer

UTV Motion Pictures and Ken Ghosh held on to releasing the first look and title of their Shahid Kapoor and Genelia D'Souza starrer at the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards 2009. Reason? They mutually agreed that it would make more sense to showcase Kaminey, which is Shahid's next release, over the yet untitled venture starring the same actor.
Ken says, "I was contemplating releasing the first look of the film along with the title. We were even thinking of kick starting some mini promotion at IIFA for our film. However, it was agreed upon that promotion of Kaminey should hold centre stage. So we are keeping low for the Shahid and Genelia starrer. In any case the movie is some distance away from release."
Point to be noted is that both Kaminey as well as Ken Ghosh's films are UTV productions. Since both films feature Shahid Kapoor as the leading man, it would have been an in-house competition had focus shifted even slightly on the latter film.
"That's true", agrees Ken, "At the end of the day everyone out here is a mature individual and there was no reason why anyone would have stepped over another's product. Let Kaminey release and after that, we also have to wait for Yash Raj Films' Hadippa (tentative title) which again stars Shahid. Once these two movies come, we will become aggressive on promotion of our film."
Ken nevertheless did travel to Macau for IIFA. For Ken, this was a pleasure trip than a business outing. "I am close to Wizcraft people (who are producing and promoting the event) and they wanted me as a guest there", informs Ken, "However, let this not be looked as a way to promote our film. I was mainly looking at having a gala outing."
He is quite positive about Shahid's next release Kaminey though. "Shahid was telling me the other day that the film has turned out to be fantabulous. I have got similar feelers from other sources as well. I would be glad if Kaminey works (which actually I am sure about). If an actor's film does well, it only benefits your own film that arrives after that."
Meanwhile, he is relieved that the shooting for his film has wrapped up completely. "It's time to head for post production now. We are in no hurry and would bring our film only around 2009 end or early 2010", signs off Ken.

Film: "Short Kut - The Con Is On"; Music Directors: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy; Lyricist: Javed Akhtar; Singers: Shankar Mahadevan, Shreya Ghosal, Javed Ali,

She is one of the biggest and coolest actresses in Bollywood. And she happens to be a big Bollywood Hungama fan. Ravishing Katrina Kaif charms with her elegance and candour in the first part of this bollywoodhungama.com exclusive with Faridoon Shahryar. She talks about her film 'New York', the experience of being on '10 Ka Dum' and why she doesn't let gossip in tabloids upset her. Check out a rare video!

'Short Kut...' not best work of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (Music Review

Film: "Short Kut - The Con Is On"; Music Directors: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy; Lyricist: Javed Akhtar; Singers: Shankar Mahadevan, Shreya Ghosal, Javed Ali, Sonu Nigam, Alka Yagnik, Nikita Nigam, Kirti Sagathia and Hrishikesh Kamerkar; Ratings: **1/2
"Short Kut - The Con Is On" had everything going right for it - famous composers, best lyricist and talented singers like Alka Yagnik and Sonu Nigam going behind the mike. Yet the music of the film is not as interesting as one expected.
The soundtrack of the film - an Anil Kapoor production starring Akshaye Khanna, Arshad Warsi and Amrita Rao - entails four originals and two remixes.
"Kal nau baje", a melodious romantic number, is crooned by Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik. Soft music and vocals by two experienced and talented singers are the high points of the song. It has the potential to stay with the listener even after the song is over.
Up next is "Kyun hota hai dil deewana" and it is sung by Javed Ali and Shreya Ghosal. The song has traces of qawalli music but it's not very prominent. It's foot-tapping, high on beats and does appeal for some time but lacks in holding the interest for long. The lyrics are nothing extraordinary.
"Mareeze mohabbat", a fusion of rustic and western influences, is different owing to its sudden break from Indian music to western and back to Indian during the course of the song.
The track is sung by Sonu Nigam's sister Nikita Nigam along with Kirti Sagathia, Hrishikesh Kamerkar and Shankar Mahadevan. With touches of English rap interlinked with Indian touches, the song does have a potential to impress the listener.
The song also has a remixed version, making the already fast-paced song fit for the dance floor.
Finally, we have the title track of the film "Patli gali", sung by Shanker Mahadevan. The song, which has psychedelic and electronic beats in abundance, somehow lacks the punch and the quality to garner the attention of the listener. The song has lyrics which are quite unlike Javed Akhter's work.
The remix version of the song does no good for the original.
Compositions by the trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy always reinforce one's faith in good music as they don't shy away from experimenting. However, the composers have not gone that extra mile for the album of " Short Kut - The Con Is On". The music is not bad, yet it is not as good as their earlier work

Soha Ali Khan got 'Tum Mile' for new appeal: Director

New Delhi, June 19 (IANS) Bollywood actress Soha Ali Khan's "new appeal" and "mature" looks helped her bag "Tum Mile", says Kunal Deshmukh.
"I needed someone like Soha who has the looks that still have a new appeal despite being in the film industry, but could also bring in some maturity to her character. I did not need a newcomer and hence it was my idea to cast her for 'Tum Mile'," Deshmukh told IANS in a telephonic interview from Mumbai.
"In fact, it was for this reason that I cast her opposite Emraan (Hashmi) and it has turned out to be a brilliant casting. She's done her job very well and I am so happy to have roped her in the project," he added.
"Tum Mile" is a romantic movie about a couple stuck in the July 26, 2005, Mumbai deluge.
Co-produced by Sony Music and Vishesh Films, "Tum Mile" is Deshmukh's second directorial venture after "Jannat".
"We needed to recreate the deluge and had to shoot in water for over 12 hours a day for 'Tum Mile', but rather than throwing tantrums, Soha showed exemplary levels of energy on the sets," said Deshmukh.
"Soha was like GI Joe (military-themed action figure). She didn't get tired at all and never stopped. She kept on working. She is one of those who would never give up," he added.
Deskhmukh feels that Soha, who has appeared in films like "Rang De Basanti", "Mumbai Meri Jaan" and "Ahista Ahista", is yet to get her due in the Hindi film industry.
"She has been very good in her career so far and is getting better. She is an extremely talented actress. Unfortunately, she hasn't got a great role yet to show her skills but eventually she will," he said.
"Tum Mile" is tentatively slated for release on July 24.

Rumours of my rift with Akshaye nonsense: Arshad Warsi

Mumbai, June 20 (IANS) Arshad Warsi is irritated with rumours that all is not well between him and Akshaye Khanna, his co-star in "Shortkut - The Con Is On".
"I am so surprised that throughout the making of the film there was no (report of a) rift between the two actors. However, just when a film of theirs is round the corner, things start turning sour between them. Someone needs to really explain to me how and where does this actually happen," Arshad told IANS.
Regarding the promotion of "Shortkut", the actor clears the air around Akshaye and him not being seen together on a common platform.
"It's all sheer nonsense when people write something or react to grapevine just for the sake of it. The fact is that I was severely jetlagged. I had travelled from New York to Macau and had serious issues with the time zone difference.
"I had an immense headache and couldn't make it for the press event where Akshaye was present. A story was unnecessarily being made out of it when both Akshaye and I knew what was really wrong," he said.
"It's just that when I am targeted for no apparent reason time and again, I feel bad. I get troubled whether my audiences and fans would start suspecting me some day. I hope that doesn't happen though."
In the past also - for films like "Golmaal Returns", "Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal" and "Dhamaal" - there have been rumours that Arshad has not shared good vibes with his co-actors.
Is he a soft target because he is mostly seen in multihero projects?
"Possibly yes. And tomorrow it may even become worse if I am in a single hero project. Rumour mongers won't be left with any other choice than to start linking me with every other heroine," he said.
The actor remembers how there was unnecessary bad blood being created between him and John Abraham during the promotion of "Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal".
"We were quite happy working during the film but trouble started when a publicity picture of the film had John holding more prominence. There was controversy being created even though I myself was least bothered," he said.

Bollywood Movie Review: Paying Guests

Never judge a book by its cover. But we do! We tend to get carried away by eye-catching promos that a film-maker unleashes prior to a film's release. We act in haste, rush to a nearby cineplex and soon realise that the best parts were actually highlighted in the promos itself.
That's exactly what you feel when you watch PAYING GUESTS, helmed by first-timer Paritosh Painter.
Comedy is serious business and Paritosh Painter ought to know this by now, since he has successfully directed a number of plays in the past. Sadly, PAYING GUESTS stands on a waferthin plot, although Paritosh tries hard to add meat to the skeletal body. The film doesn't have the power to hold your attention for the next 2 hours, although it does [intermittently] make you smile or break into a guffaw.
Earlier too, we've had our macho men getting disguised as girls [Rishi Kapoor and Paintal in RAFOO CHAKKAR were hilarious], but PAYING GUESTS tries so hard to tickle your funny bone, but falls flat.
Final word? This comedy is more of a tragedy... for its viewers!
What happens when four fun-loving boys [Shreyas Talpade, Jaaved Jaffrey, Ashish Chowdhry and Vatsal Sheth] begin a crazy house hunt? In the search for a new accommodation, these crazy friends manage to convince their crazier landlord Ballu [Johny Lever] to keep them as paying guests, but Ballu has one condition, i.e. he wants only couples.
However, the problem is they are all bachelors. Who will play their wives?
PAYING GUESTS may be a remake of a play, but it also bears a striking resemblance to Sachin's super-successful Marathi film ASHI HI BANWA BANWI. PAYING GUESTS starts off very well, but runs out of fuel in its initial 30 minutes itself.
You do laugh aloud initially and expect to wear a smile on your face all through the film, but the smile turns into a smirk gradually. Actually, the on-screen characters laugh all the while, not the audience.
PAYING GUESTS fails to deliver thanks to a poor screenplay. Barring the four heroes and the landlords [Johny Lever and Delnaaz Paul], the remaining characters in the film just don't work. The four leading ladies have nothing worthwhile to do and even the negative forces here [Chunkey Pandey and Inder Kumar] are wasted.
The climax - in a theatre, with every character doing a spoof - is a straight lift from JAANE BHI DO YAARO.
Paritosh Painter had an interesting idea on hand, but the writing plays the villain here. Sajid-Wajid's music is a ear-sore. Barring 'Jack & Jill', the remaining songs lack energy. Visually, the film looks good, with the locales of Bangkok and Pattaya adding freshness to the enterprise.
Of the cast, Shreyas is the best, followed by Javed, then Ashish and then Vatsal - in that order. The leading ladies don't have much to do, but Celina and Neha are most noticeable. Riya and Sayali Bhagat don't get any scope. Johny Lever is in form and so is Delnaaz Paul. Chunkey Pandey is alright, while Inder Kumar is wasted. Asrani stands out, while Viju Khote and Paintal are okay.
On the whole, this paying guest is just not welcome!

Bollywood Movie Review: Let's Dance

Just last week, Vashu Bhagnani showcased his son Jackky Bhagnani's acting skills in KAL KISSNE DEKHA. This week, another father - Arvind Patel - attempts to showcase his daughter Gayatri Patel's dancing skills in LET'S DANCE, directed by Aarif Sheikh. Come to think of it, such launch pads often act as a showreel for furthering the career in Bollywood. In that respect, LET'S DANCE succeeds... to an extent.
But there's a hitch! The film bears an uncanny resemblance to Ramgopal Varma's immensely likable RANGEELA and Yash Raj's utterly forgettable AAJA NACHLE. No issues if LET'S DANCE seeks inspiration from elsewhere [coincidence?], but in an effort to showcase Gayatri's dances, the remaining aspects take a backseat. The dances appeal, but the love story doesn't. And the crime angle, injected in the plotline, is a big bore.
Let's be specific. Gayatri's dances are a treat [she dances exceptionally well], but her love interest cuts a sorry picture. The street children's connection with a crook also seems unwarranted.
In a nutshell, LET'S DANCE will be best remembered for Gayatri's exuberant dances. That's it!
LET'S DANCE is about a girl who gives direction in life to a group of street kids. Young and peppy, she is a dancer who runs her own dance school and plays the catalyst in the story. She comes in contact with a bunch of street kids and hence, begins a journey she believes in.
Editor-turned-director Aarif Sheikh has shot the film well, but he could've done with a tighter script. Music is a plus point, but what stays with you is the choreography of all songs, especially 'Taare Todh Ke La'.
Gayatri Patel is a fine actress and her dancing skills catch your attention. The two heroes don't cut ice, but the kids do, mainly the eldest kid who talks and behaves like a real tapori.
On the whole, LET'S DANCE is too ordinary, with its share of limitations

My Ranbir-Priyanka starrer is not titled Aaj Phir Jeene..." - Siddharth Anand

A couple of days back there was a strong buzz doing the rounds that Siddharth Anand has named his next film as Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai. However, this is far from true as the man at the hot seat, Siddharth, has firmly denied that this to be the title of his Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra starrer.
"This was never the name of the film. I have no clue from where has this rumour originated. In fact I am yet to lock the final title of the film", says Siddharth who is amused with this piece of news floating around.
A Sajid Nadiadwala production, the film is also special for Siddharth since this is for the first time ever that he would be working with a production house outside Yash Raj Films. He has earlier made Salaam Namaste, Ta Ra Rum Pum and Bachna Ae Haseeno, all being successful in their own right, and has now graduated to making films for the outside banner.
As he begins working on first of these films, he finds himself without a title for this Sajid Nadiadwala production. The enterprising producer is showing trust in new directors, what with giving opportunities to Sajid Khan (Heyy Babyy, Housefull), Shirish Kunder (Jaan-E-Mann) and now Sabbir Khan (Kambakkht Ishq).
Coming back to Siddharth Anand, even though he has branched out of Yash Raj Films (at least for the time being), his stint with Vishal-Shekhar continues. After composing music for each of his three films earlier, the composer duo is working with him again on the Sajid Nadiadwala project.
Vishal Dadlani too was zapped when informed about the title of the film. "What rubbish, I have no clue what you are talking about", he says in mock anger, "By no means is Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai the title of the film. We would know if that was the case, right? In fact till yesterday we were having a discussion and desperately trying to lock a title. Some people's imaginations really run hard and the film's title to be finalised as Aaj Phir Jeene... is yet another such instance."
Guess this song from Dev Anand-Waheeda Rehman starrer Guide will have to wait for a while before it finally sees a film based on this title!
